Cola is one of the most well-known drinks in the world. Whether you are surrounded by the sights and sounds of New York City or at peace in the Indonesian jungle: nearly everyone knows cola and its variety of brands. It’s tasty, refreshing and slightly indulgent. Aside from that, it’s also very versatile. Do you want less sugar? Try light colas. Are you sensitive to caffeine? You can buy it without. By now there are also about 50 cola brands, with Coca-Cola and Pepsi being the most famous two.

Believe it or not, it was a doctor who first invented the fizzy, sugary drink that we blame so many of our health problems on. In 1886, American doctor John Styth Pemberton began experimenting with plant essences and herbal extracts in a tiny kitchen behind his pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia. His actual intention while experimenting was to brew a powerful tonic that could fight against dizziness and depression. He brewed a syrup, mixed it with sparkling water and sold it for a whopping five cents per glass. Pemberton’s best friend and bookkeeper thought of the name Coca-Cola and also came up with the famous font. In the end the two men sold the name, the brand and the secret recipe in 1888 for just 550 American dollars. They didn’t know back then that this ‘experiment’ would spread all over the world and become the best-selling beverage of all time.

But did you know that cola is more than just a very tasty drink? You can also use the beverage for household chores or for other unexpected, off-label uses. Curious about how cola will make your life a little easier? Keep reading to find out, but you’ve been warned: you may never drink the stuff again.
