Have you ever been to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida? And have you ever noticed that the state is usually buzzing with mosquitoes because of its sticky weather and swampland, but that they are strangely nowhere to be found in Disney. Unusual, isn’t it? There is a very good reason behind it, and we are going to explain it. When Disney World opened its doors in 1971, there were in fact mosquitoes there, but since then they have disappeared. The place was built following the success of California’s Disneyland, which opened in 1955. Creators wanted the population on the east side of the country to be able to enjoy the magic as well, and therefore picked Florida in order to build “the Happiest Place on Earth.”

A special project

At first, the park remained a secret during the 1960s and was even planned under the code name “The Florida Project”, and the filmmaker had a very special idea of what he wanted to accomplish with it. It included an area called  Epcot – for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow”, which would be a special urban community. Unfortunately, Walt Disney died in December 1966, and it led to the project turning into something much more similar to Disneyland, and Disney never got to see his dreams for Disney World come true. In the end, Epcot opened in 1982, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1989 and Animal Kingdom in 1998, and the park immediately became a huge success with the biggest number of visitors on the planet.
